A five marker home blood test assessing iron stores, circulating iron and iron transport.
The panel measures ferritin, serum iron, transferrin, TIBC and transferrin saturation. It can provide useful context where low iron stores or iron overload is suspected, but it cannot diagnose anaemia or establish the underlying cause by itself.
The panel does not include haemoglobin, red blood cell indices or a full blood count. These are required to determine whether anaemia is present and how severe it may be.

Transferrin saturation
Transferrin saturation, often shortened to TSAT, estimates the percentage of iron binding sites on transferrin that are occupied. It is calculated from serum iron and TIBC.
Low TSAT may support iron deficiency, while a persistently raised result may require assessment for iron overload. It should be interpreted with ferritin, serum iron, transferrin, inflammation, liver health and supplement use.

Ferritin is the principal laboratory marker used to estimate stored iron. A low result strongly supports depleted iron stores.
Ferritin is also an acute phase protein and may rise during inflammation, infection, liver disease, obesity and other conditions. A normal or high result can therefore sometimes mask iron deficiency.

Serum iron
Serum iron measures iron circulating in the blood at the time of collection. Iron is needed to produce haemoglobin, but the serum result changes with meals, time of day, supplements and illness.
It should not be used alone to diagnose iron deficiency, iron deficiency anaemia or haemochromatosis.

Transferrin
Transferrin is produced mainly by the liver and transports iron through the blood. The concentration often increases when the body is trying to capture more iron.

Total iron binding capacity
Total iron binding capacity, known as TIBC, estimates the total amount of iron that blood proteins could bind. It mainly reflects transferrin.
TIBC may be measured directly or calculated using serum iron and UIBC. UIBC represents the unused iron binding capacity and may not appear as a separate reported biomarker.

Does this test diagnose iron deficiency anaemia?
