Energy & Fatigue Blood Test Home Kits UK

Medically checkedReviewed by the Grace Belgravia Medical Expert BoardLast reviewed 28 July 2026

Compare general wellness, thyroid, iron, vitamin and blood sugar home blood tests when persistent tiredness or reduced energy prompts you to seek laboratory context.

Fatigue is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. It can relate to sleep, stress, mood, infection, medicines, iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, vitamin deficiency and many other causes. Blood testing can help investigate selected explanations, but no single home panel can diagnose the reason for persistent fatigue.

Symptoms and risk factors

When different testing routes may be relevant

Fatigue with pale skin or breathlessnessIron deficiency and other forms of anaemia may be considered, particularly with heavy periods, blood loss or restricted dietary intake.
Fatigue with temperature or weight changeThyroid testing may be relevant when low energy occurs with cold or heat intolerance, bowel change, palpitations or weight change.
Fatigue with thirst or frequent urinationBlood sugar assessment may be appropriate. Rapidly developing symptoms need prompt clinical review.
Restricted diet or absorption riskB12, folate, iron and vitamin D may be relevant depending on diet, medicines, gastrointestinal conditions and supplementation.
General low energy without a clear patternA wellness panel may provide selected baseline information, but a clinician may choose different tests after taking a full history.
Post-exertional worseningSevere or prolonged fatigue after activity needs clinical assessment; there is no single diagnostic blood test for ME/CFS.
Fatigue requires context.

NHS guidance notes that blood tests may be used to investigate causes such as anaemia, diabetes or thyroid disease. NICE guidance for possible ME/CFS also recommends clinical assessment and selected investigations to exclude alternative diagnoses.

Plain-English biomarker guide

Markers commonly considered when investigating fatigue

Full blood count

Measures red cells, white cells and platelets. It can provide context for anaemia or infection, but abnormalities may need further investigation.

Ferritin and iron profile

Ferritin reflects stored iron, while iron-profile markers add information about transport and availability. Inflammation can complicate interpretation.

TSH, free T4 and free T3

Markers used to assess thyroid function. They are interpreted together with symptoms, medicines and clinical context.

Vitamin B12 and folate

Vitamins involved in blood formation and neurological function. Deficiency can cause fatigue and other symptoms, but the underlying cause matters.

Vitamin D

Measured using 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Low status can coexist with fatigue, but fatigue alone does not prove vitamin D deficiency.

HbA1c

A marker of average glycaemic exposure over approximately the previous two to three months. Conditions affecting red blood cells can alter interpretation.

Blood glucose

A point-in-time measurement. Fasting preparation, illness, medicines, sleep and stress can influence the result.

Preparation and limitations

Improve the usefulness of your result

Check fasting instructionsRequirements differ between products. Use the exact instructions supplied with the kit.
Record medicines and supplementsIron, vitamins, hormones, steroids and biotin can affect several biomarkers.
Note recent illnessInfection, inflammation, dehydration and recovery from illness can temporarily alter results.
Consider sleep and moodPoor sleep, anxiety, depression and stress are common contributors to fatigue and may need separate support.
Record symptom timingNote onset, triggers, severity, weight change, fever, bleeding, breathlessness and post-exertional worsening.
Do not self-prescribe high dosesExcess iron, vitamin D and other supplements can cause harm.
A normal panel does not mean symptoms are “all in your head”.

Fatigue can require assessment of sleep disorders, heart or lung disease, infection, medicines, mental health, neurological conditions and other causes not measured by a home panel.

How home testing works

From choosing the kit to arranging follow-up

1

Define the question

Choose a general panel or a focused iron, thyroid, vitamin or glucose route.

2

Review the scope

Check included biomarkers, sample type, preparation and limitations.

3

Collect carefully

Use the supplied equipment and follow collection instructions exactly.

4

Return the sample

Package and send it through the specified route and timeframe.

5

Laboratory analysis

The sample follows the relevant analytical and quality-control pathway.

6

Review the next step

Arrange medical follow-up for persistent symptoms or abnormal results.

Laboratory and testing standards

Home collection supported by a defined laboratory pathway

General wellness, thyroid, iron, vitamin and glucose tests use different analytical methods. Check the current product specification for laboratory, accreditation, sample and reporting details.

  • Sample identity and acceptance checks
  • Assay-specific quality-control procedures
  • Defined sample stability and return requirements
  • Secure digital reporting

Frequently asked questions

Energy and fatigue blood test FAQs

Which blood test should I choose for fatigue?

Choose according to symptoms and risk factors. Iron testing may suit fatigue with heavy periods or pallor, thyroid testing may suit thyroid-type symptoms, and vitamin or glucose testing may be relevant in selected circumstances.

Can a home blood test diagnose the cause of tiredness?

No. It can identify selected abnormalities, but fatigue has many possible causes and may require clinical assessment.

Should I choose a wellness panel or a focused test?

Choose a focused test when the question is clear. Choose a wellness panel only when its full biomarker list is relevant to your needs.

Can iron deficiency cause fatigue?

Yes. Iron-deficiency anaemia can cause tiredness, lack of energy, breathlessness and palpitations, but the cause of iron deficiency still needs assessment.

Can thyroid problems cause low energy?

Yes. Both underactive and overactive thyroid conditions can affect energy, but symptoms are non-specific and require appropriate testing and interpretation.

Can B12 or folate deficiency cause fatigue?

Yes. Deficiency can affect blood formation and cause fatigue, while B12 deficiency may also cause neurological symptoms.

Can diabetes cause tiredness?

Yes. Tiredness can occur with diabetes, especially alongside thirst, frequent urination or weight loss. Rapid symptoms need prompt clinical assessment.

Can a normal test rule out ME/CFS?

No. There is no single diagnostic blood test for ME/CFS. Diagnosis is clinical and involves excluding alternative conditions.

Do I need to fast?

Preparation depends on the chosen test and included biomarkers. Follow the exact instructions supplied with the kit.

Can supplements affect my result?

Yes. Iron, vitamin D, B12, folate and biotin supplements can affect relevant results. Record doses and follow product guidance.

What should I do if all results are normal?

Seek medical advice if fatigue persists. Sleep disorders, mood, medicines, infection, cardiovascular disease and other causes may not be measured by the panel.

When should I seek urgent help?

Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, one-sided weakness, black stools, vomiting blood or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Are these collection materials medically reviewed?

This collection guide has named medical and quality reviewers. The review process for an individual laboratory report depends on the product pathway.
