Frequently asked questions
Women’s health and hormone test FAQs
Which female hormone test should I choose?
Choose according to the question you want to answer. A focused LH, FSH and androgen panel is different from a combined hormone and metabolic panel, while AMH provides selected ovarian-reserve context. Review the exact biomarker list before ordering.
Can I take a female hormone blood test at home?
Yes. These kits use capillary blood collected at home and returned for laboratory analysis.
What day of my cycle should I test?
Cycle timing depends on the biomarkers and the reason for testing. Baseline LH and FSH are often interpreted in the early follicular phase, while some tests can be taken at another time if the cycle day is recorded.
Can these tests diagnose PCOS?
No. PCOS diagnosis requires clinical assessment and exclusion of other causes. Hormone results can provide context but do not diagnose PCOS by themselves.
Can AMH tell me how fertile I am?
No. AMH provides selected ovarian-reserve context but does not measure egg quality, confirm ovulation or guarantee natural conception or treatment success.
Can I test while taking contraception or HRT?
You can collect a sample, but hormonal treatment can materially alter results. Record the product, dose, route and timing, and do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.
Do I need to fast?
Many female hormone tests do not require fasting, but combined metabolic panels may have additional instructions. Follow the guidance supplied with the specific kit.
Can these tests diagnose menopause?
Not by themselves. In many people over 45, menopause is diagnosed clinically from symptoms and cycle history. Blood tests may be useful in selected situations.
What symptoms might prompt hormone testing?
Irregular periods, acne, unwanted hair growth, scalp hair thinning, cycle changes or fertility questions may prompt discussion, but these symptoms are non-specific and can have several causes.
When should I seek urgent medical advice?
Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding with dizziness or fainting, possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding, severe headache with visual changes or rapidly progressing virilisation.
Are the results medically reviewed?
This collection guide includes named medical and quality reviewers. Individual laboratory results should still be interpreted in the context of symptoms, medicines and medical history.
What happens if a result is abnormal?
Read the laboratory commentary and arrange clinical follow-up. Repeat testing, additional blood tests, imaging or specialist assessment may be appropriate.
