Inflammation & CRP Blood Test Home Kits UK

Medically checkedReviewed by the Grace Belgravia Medical Expert BoardLast reviewed 28 July 2026

Compare a focused high-sensitivity CRP test with a broader wellness screen that includes CRP alongside thyroid, lipid, kidney-related, vitamin and morning cortisol markers.

C-reactive protein is a non-specific inflammatory marker produced mainly by the liver. A raised result can occur with infection, injury, strenuous exercise, dental inflammation, autoimmune activity and many other conditions. It cannot show where inflammation is located or establish the cause.

Focused or broader? One inflammation marker or a wider health screen?Choose according to the question and the additional biomarkers you genuinely need.
Do not use CRP testing to assess urgent symptoms.

Severe chest pain, breathlessness, collapse, confusion, a stiff neck, severe abdominal pain or rapidly worsening illness requires urgent medical assessment.

Home CRP Test Kit UK – High Sensitivity hsCRP

A focused capillary blood test measuring high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. The assay detects lower CRP concentrations than a conventional CRP test, but the result remains non-specific.

What the result can mean

Understanding CRP without over-interpreting it

Temporary infectionColds, flu, dental infection and other illnesses can raise CRP transiently.
Inflammatory conditionsCRP may rise with autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, but it cannot identify which condition is present.
Injury or surgeryTissue injury and recent procedures can increase CRP.
Strenuous exerciseIntense exercise may temporarily affect inflammatory measurements.
Cardiovascular contexthsCRP has been studied as an additional risk marker, but standard cardiovascular risk factors remain central.
Normal resultsA normal result does not exclude every inflammatory, infectious or autoimmune condition.
Current UK cardiovascular assessment does not rely on hsCRP alone.

Age, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, kidney health, family history and formal risk assessment remain more important than a standalone hsCRP result.

Preparation and timing

Improve the usefulness of your CRP result

Avoid testing during acute illnessA temporary infection may produce a result that does not reflect your usual baseline.
Record medicinesCorticosteroids, anti-inflammatory medicines and other treatments can affect inflammatory markers.
Record recent exerciseStrenuous activity may influence the result.
Note dental or gum inflammationOral inflammation can contribute to a raised CRP result.
Repeat when well if advisedAn unexpected result may need confirmation after temporary causes have resolved.
Use the correct timing for broader panelsThe wellness screen includes morning cortisol and therefore has additional timing requirements.

Laboratory and testing standards

Focused and broader panels use defined laboratory pathways

High-sensitivity CRP and multi-marker wellness testing require different analytical and preparation considerations. Check the current product specification for sample, laboratory, accreditation and reporting details.

  • Sample identity and acceptance checks
  • Assay-specific analytical quality controls
  • Defined sample stability and return requirements
  • Secure digital reporting
  • Clear test scope and limitations

Frequently asked questions

Inflammation and CRP blood test FAQs

What is CRP?

C-reactive protein is produced mainly by the liver in response to inflammatory signals.

What is the difference between CRP and hsCRP?

High-sensitivity CRP measures lower concentrations of the same protein. It is not a different inflammatory substance.

Can hsCRP diagnose inflammation?

It can show that CRP is detectable or raised, but it cannot identify the location, cause or duration of inflammation.

Can CRP diagnose an autoimmune condition?

No. Autoimmune diagnosis requires symptoms, examination and condition-specific investigations.

Can infection raise CRP?

Yes. Acute infection is a common reason for a temporarily raised result.

Should I test while I have a cold or flu?

A current illness may raise CRP and make the result less representative of your usual baseline.

Can exercise affect hsCRP?

Strenuous exercise can temporarily influence inflammatory markers.

Do I need to fast?

Fasting is not normally required for the focused hsCRP test. The broader wellness screen has separate preparation requirements.

Does a normal CRP rule out inflammation?

No. Some inflammatory and autoimmune conditions can occur with a normal CRP result.

Should a raised result be repeated?

It may be appropriate to repeat testing when you are well, particularly if infection or another temporary cause was present.

Can hsCRP diagnose heart disease?

No. It cannot diagnose or rule out coronary artery disease, heart attack or stroke.

Are the product images fully visible on mobile?

Yes. Both product images use uncropped contain scaling so the complete packaging and printed text remain visible.
