Liver & Kidney Function Blood Test Home Kits UK

Medically checkedReviewed by the Grace Belgravia Medical Expert BoardLast reviewed 28 July 2026

Compare focused liver and kidney function home blood tests with clear guidance on enzymes, proteins, creatinine, urea and estimated kidney filtration.

The liver and kidneys perform different roles, so these tests should not be treated as interchangeable. A liver panel reports selected enzymes and proteins, while a kidney test provides filtration-related context using creatinine, urea and calculated eGFR. Neither test can diagnose every liver or kidney condition by itself.

Kidney filtration context

Home Kidney Function Test UK – eGFR & Creatinine

A focused capillary blood test measuring urea and creatinine and calculating estimated glomerular filtration rate. Kidney interpretation often also requires urine albumin testing and repeat measurements.

Understanding the reported measurements

ALTAn enzyme found mainly in liver cells. Raised levels can occur with several liver and non-liver conditions.
GGTAn enzyme influenced by alcohol, medicines and biliary conditions. It is not specific to one diagnosis.
ALPAn enzyme associated with bile ducts and bone. Other results help identify the likely source.
AlbuminA protein made by the liver. Low levels can also occur with inflammation, kidney loss or poor nutrition.
CreatinineA waste product affected by muscle mass, hydration, diet and kidney filtration.
eGFRA calculated estimate of kidney filtration. Trends and urine testing may be more informative than one result.
UreaA waste product affected by hydration, protein intake, bleeding and kidney function.
Total proteinThe combined amount of albumin and globulins in the blood.
GlobulinA group of proteins involved in immune and transport functions. Changes have many possible causes.

Preparation and interpretation

Improve the usefulness of the result

Record medicines and supplementsSome medicines, bodybuilding products and herbal preparations can affect liver or kidney markers.
Note hydration and exerciseDehydration and strenuous exercise can influence creatinine, urea and some enzyme results.
Record alcohol intakeAlcohol can influence liver enzymes and should be considered when interpreting the report.
Do not diagnose from one valuePatterns, previous results and the degree of change are often more informative.
Check product instructionsUse the supplied collection and timing guidance even when fasting is not required.
Arrange follow-up when neededUnexpected or substantially abnormal results may require repeat venous testing, urine tests or imaging.

Laboratory and testing standards

Home collection supported by a defined laboratory pathway

Liver enzymes, proteins, creatinine and urea use different analytical methods. Check the current product specification for laboratory, accreditation, sample and reporting details.

  • Sample identity and acceptance checks
  • Assay-specific quality-control procedures
  • Defined sample stability and return requirements
  • Secure digital reporting
  • Clear test scope and stated limitations

Frequently asked questions

Liver and kidney function test FAQs

Which test should I choose?

Choose the liver panel for ALT, GGT, ALP and protein-related measurements. Choose the kidney test for urea, creatinine and calculated eGFR.

Can these tests diagnose liver or kidney disease?

No. They provide selected laboratory information. Diagnosis may require repeat testing, urine analysis, imaging, examination and medical history.

What does the liver function test measure?

It reports albumin, total protein, globulin, GGT, ALT and ALP.

What does the kidney function test measure?

It measures urea and creatinine and reports a calculated estimated glomerular filtration rate.

Does one low eGFR mean chronic kidney disease?

No. Chronic kidney disease usually requires persistent evidence over time or other markers of kidney damage. Repeat testing and urine ACR may be needed.

Can dehydration affect kidney results?

Yes. Dehydration can raise urea and creatinine and may temporarily reduce calculated eGFR.

Can exercise affect creatinine or liver enzymes?

Yes. Strenuous exercise and muscle injury can alter creatinine and some enzyme measurements.

Can alcohol affect liver blood tests?

Yes. Alcohol can affect liver enzymes, particularly GGT, although abnormal results are not specific to alcohol use.

Do I need to fast?

Fasting is not generally required for these two focused tests, but always follow the individual kit instructions.

What should I do with an abnormal result?

Review the degree and pattern of abnormality with a healthcare professional. Repeat venous testing, urine tests or imaging may be appropriate.

When should I seek urgent help?

Seek urgent care for jaundice, vomiting blood, black stools, confusion, severe abdominal pain, very little urine, blood in the urine, facial swelling or sudden breathlessness.

Are the product images fully visible on mobile?

Yes. Both product images use uncropped square frames with contain scaling so the complete packaging and printed text remain visible.
